The Flying Penguin Press

Dirt Cheap! It's Free!

I remind the textually challenged that the Flying Penguin is published on a monthly-maybe basis (maybe I'll print it this month, and maybe I won't. You don't like it? Go suck on a muffler...). This newsletter is, and always will be FREE! Why am I doing this? Probably because I need my head examined!

For the benefit of nameless parties (oh okay, I'll name them: park employees) I'm not selling anything. This is a free service I provide for my fellow fliers because the aforementioned nameless people have a problem with RC want-ads on the field's bulletin board (oh, but hanging posters for gun shows at the shooting range is okay, though... nice double standard).

As always, posting an ad in the Penguin is FREE, but if you'd like to show your appreciation for my efforts here, I will gladly accept a donation of two dollars. This donation is strictly voluntary, but if you want to show your support, it would be appreciated, (and you'll be helping support my bad habits). Please send in your ads now for next month's issue. If you'd like a subscription, send me a book of stamps and I'll mail you an issue each month. If you'd like me to Fax the Penguin to you each month (you must have a fax that answers automatically), contact me with your Fax number. REMEMBER, IT'S FREE!

Send me your drawings, cartoons, or photos to share with us. Editorials and articles will be reviewed for submission (and then promptly tossed in the trash).

The Flying Penguin

PENGUIN COOP BURNED TO THE GROUND!

Well, I know it’s going to disappoint some of you (and cheer up a whole lot of you) but I’ve stopped writing the weekly Flying Penguin’s Coop column in R/C Report magazine. I got in over my head on some other projects and I got very busy at work, so I just couldn’t commit the time to it (and frankly, I was running outta crap to write about anyway...).

Gordon Banks, R/C Report’s editor, has left the door open for me and I would certainly like to take another stab at it again sometime. I really enjoyed writing the column (and they actually pay you for writing that crap!). Maybe I’ll take a year sabbatical and then give it another go.

For those of you who are connected to the Internet, I’ll be posting the ten columns I wrote for R/C Report on my web site. One difference, though - most of these are my original drafts before Gordon and I "sanitized" them for a family magazine (I don’t know, when I was growing up I heard lot’s of friggin cussing in my home - mostly from my old man - and it never bothered me worth a crap...).

BOB’S TOP TEN

IMPOSSIBLE THINGS TO WISH FOR...

#10 - Glow plugs that last a year.

#9 - Engines that start on the first flip every time.

#8 - A gas engine that weighs less than a lawnmower.

#7 - Clear glow fuel.

#6 - Five knots blowing right down the runway and no rain in sight.

#5 - Straight work benches

#4 - Enough money for that next big project.

#3 - The flying field all to yourself on a Sunday afternoon.

#2 - A 1/3 scale Twin Beechcraft.

#1 - A Playboy centerfold model showing up at the flying field with a 1/3 scale Twin Beechcraft who needs someone to take it up for her (oh yeah...)

OUCH!

This news story doesn’t exactly apply to R/C flying (except that I’ve heard of something similar happening involving bullets and a glow starter in someone’s pocket), but I thought it had a good safety lesson to teach (and it was just too damn funny...). Just remember, the President comes from Arkansas...

From the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, July 25, 1996:

Two Local Men Injured in Freak Truck Accident, Cotton Patch, Ark.

Two local men were seriously injured when their pick-up truck left the road and struck a tree near Cotton Patch on State Highway 38 early Monday morning. Woodruff County deputy Dovey Snyder reported the accident shortly after midnight Monday. Thurston Poole, 33, of Des Arc and Billy Ray Wallis, 38, of Little Rock are listed in serious condition at Baptist Medical Centre. The accident occurred as the two men were returning to Des Arc after a frog gigging trip. On an overcast Sunday night, Poole's pick-up truck headlights malfunctioned. The two men concluded that the headlight fuse on the older model truck had burned out. As a replacement fuse was not available, Wallis noticed that the .22 caliber bullet from his pistol fit perfectly into the fuse box next to the steering wheel column. Upon inserting the bullet, the headlights again began to operate properly and the two men proceeded on east-bound toward the White River bridge. After travelling approximately twenty miles and just before crossing the river, the bullet apparently overheated, discharged and struck Poole in the right testicle. The vehicle swerved sharply to the right exiting the pavement and striking a tree. Poole suffered only minor cuts and abrasions from the accident, but will require surgery to repair the other wound. Wallis sustained a broken clavicle and was treated and released. "Thank God we weren't on that bridge when Thurston shot his nuts off or we might both be dead" stated Wallis. "I've been a trooper for ten years in this part of the world, but this is a first for me. I can't believe that those two would admit how this accident happened", said Snyder. Upon being notified of the wreck, Lavinia, Poole's wife asked how many frogs the boys had caught and did anyone get them from the truck.
